Indiana Gaming Tech Issues Fines: Fanatics, BetMGM Self Report

Sportsbooks Pay Small Fines After Allowing Self-Excluded Bettors to Wager

The Indiana Gaming Commission handed out small fines to both Fanatics and BetMGM. The two sportsbooks notified the IGC that bettors on the voluntary self-exclusion list were allowed to place issues.

The fact the Indiana Gaming tech issues fines in such a case isn’t surprising. That’s the standard procedure in such a case. The fines were small, with both being fined $2,500.

If the sportsbooks had not reported the matter themselves, the fines would likely have been much higher if the situation had been discovered.

Fanatics and BetMGM are two of the popular online Indiana sportsbooks and each of their issues originated from technical matters. The Fanatics issue occurred when the sportsbook transitioned over from PointsBet.

According to the Indiana Gaming Commission, “On April 8, 2024, Gaming Agents began an investigation into a prohibited participant violation after receiving a report from Fanatics. The report from Fanatics provided that a prohibited participant was allowed to place wagers on their platform. The prohibited participant had an effective date of December 4, 2023, for a one-year exclusion. Between February 27, 2024, and March 22, 2024, the prohibited participant … was able to deposit $1,300 and place twenty-two (22) wagers, totaling $3,208.42. Fanatics provided that the violation was discovered by their exclusion matching service. Upon discovery, the account was flagged by the responsible gaming team and subsequently suspended.”

The bettor had $1,101.56 remaining in their account when the issue was discovered. Fanatics refunded the amount back to the bettor and accepted the Indiana Gaming tech issues fines ruling. Fanatics Senior Vice President Alex Smith signed off on the fine.

BetMGM Issues Caused by Change to Single Wallet

The BetMGM matter took place after the company changed to a single wallet system, allowing players to use the same account across its different sports betting ventures.

That way, a bettor who lives in Indiana could use his account if they were visiting a state where BetMGM accepted wagers. BetMGM discovered a player’s information regarding his exclusion list request didn’t move over properly. The bettor was allowed to place $443 worth of bets before it was discovered.

BetMGM accepted the $2,500 fine, with Director of Compliance for Bet MGM, Sarah Brennan, signing off on the matter, which is really all a sportsbook can do when the Indiana Gaming tech issues fines.

That wasn’t the only fine given to BetMGM. The sportsbook was also fined $5,000 for failing to have some employee licenses renewed on time and “allowed the licensees to work on an expired license for
approximately fifty-two (52) days.”

The employees were one Real Time Trading Analyst and six Risk & Fraud Associates. There were no employees from the BetMGM customer service team listed listed by the Indiana Gaming Commission.

Indiana currently has 12 online betting sites operating in the Hoosier State. There are also 16 retail sportsbooks, and sports betting is big business in Indiana.

There was almost $362 million wagered in May, which is up 28% from May the previous year. Caitlin Clark no doubt has played a part in that despite the Fever’s slow start to the season. There was $97.2 million bet on basketball in May, which is $25.5 million more than was bet in May 2023.
