UFC 303: McGregor vs Chandler Fight Still Uncertain

It’s Yes and No and Yes and No in These Weird Conor McGregor News

14/6 Update: McGregor vs Chandler Canceled or Postponed?

McGregor’s comeback will have to wait; his return to the Octagon has been either canceled or postponed -this is still unclear- just two weeks before he was set to fight Michael Chandler at UFC 303, due to an injury sustained by McGregor. This means the main event in Las Vegas has been called off. The fight was officially canceled by UFC President Dana White himself, after confirming McGregor’s injury, a fight that had sold out tickets in under ten minutes.

For now?

  • New Main Event and Co-Main Event

With the cancellation of the McGregor vs Chandler fight, UFC 303’s new headliner will feature Alex Pereira defending his light-heavyweight title in a rematch against Jiri Prochazka. Additionally, the co-main event has been reshuffled; Jamahal Hill’s knee injury has led to his bout with Carlos Ulberg being canceled, too. Instead, Brian Ortega will face Diego Lopes, while Ulberg will now fight Anthony Smith.

  • Remaining Fights

Despite the shake-up in the main and co-main events, UFC 303 still features other great matchups. The welterweight bout between Irishman Ian Garry and Briton Michael ‘Venom’ Page remains on the card, for one.

Actually, we could say concerns mounted after McGregor posted a cryptic Instagram message. McGregor’s now-deleted Instagram story hinted at possible injury concerns, sparking and fueling speculation that the fight might be called off.

And all is still not well in the Conor McGregor camp ahead of UFC 303. The welterweight clash between McGregor and Michael Chandler that had set everybody licking their lips in expectation, set for June 29 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, has been thrown into doubt and has not been taken down from the shelf yet.

But it hasn’t been sanctioned nor canceled outright.

Press Conference Further Triggered the Uncertainty

The cancellation of a pre-fight press conference in Dublin has only added to the uncertainty. Chandler has maintained optimism, stating the fight is still on, but the lack of official confirmation from the UFC leaves everyone guessing.

Despite Chandler’s reassurances that the fight is still on, UFC has yet to confirm its status.

On the other hand, reports indicate that the promotion is exploring replacement options, leaving fans in limbo about one of the year’s biggest UFC events.

Key Developments Regarding Conor McGregor News

  • Conor McGregor’s Cryptic Post: McGregor posted and quickly deleted a story suggesting injury concerns.
  • Chandler’s Reassurance: Michael Chandler insisted the fight is still happening.
  • Potential Replacements? An MMA journalist reported that UFC is seeking potential replacements for the main event.

UFC Silence on Conor McGregor News

With just over two weeks until UFC 303, there still hasn’t been a clear answer from the UFC. The silence from UFC has only heightened speculation, and it’s looking as if McGregor won’t step into the Octagon as planned.

Why the Waiting Game Is Bad for the Fans

For one, many fans are going to be taking a long ride to the event, which converts to having the tickets and Las Vegas accommodations in jeopardy. Some even travel internationally. And many did not invest in refundable accommodations and travel. The UFC has apparently not taken these people into account.

Still, when we do get an answer (if we ever get one) it would most likely be through Dana White, since he doesn’t trust the media. If and when an announcement is made, it will be directly from White’s mouth and we’ll just have to go along with it.

Let’s hope the main UFC 303 event goes on as scheduled and the forthcoming Conor McGregor news is good!
