Can Switzerland Pull off Another Upset?

Switzerland pulled off the first upset of the Euro 2024 knockout stage by defeating defending champions Italy, 2-0. Now, they’ll face a sputtering England team in the Quarter-Finals. In the round of 16, England were minutes away from succumbing to defeat against Slovakia but Jude Bellingham’s acrobatic bicycle kick sent the match into extra time.

Harry Kane scored the winner for England in extra time but the Three Lions still haven’t put in a complete performance during the Euros. Read on to see if we think Switzerland can pull off another upset as we make some England vs Switzerland Euro predictions.

Head-to-Head

England Stumble on to Quarters

England fell behind on Sunday to Slovakia in the first half of their round of 16 match. The Three Lions once again struggled to create good chances in attack as Slovakia frustrated England’s stars. Too often, Harry Kane, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham operate in similar spaces and it hinders England’s build up play.

Gareth Southgate has also been quite stubborn with his lineups and he continues to come under fire by the media. Had England lost, it would have almost certainly been the end of the line for the longtime England coach. However, Bellingham bailed England out, the way he bailed out Real Madrid plenty of times in the 2023-24 season. In the fifth minute of second half stoppage time, Marc Guehi headed on Kyle Walker’s long throw and Bellingham pulled off an incredible bicycle kick to send the game into extra time.

Ivan Toney made a big impact when he came on and assisted Harry Kane for the winner. England have a favorable path to the Euro 2024 final but their performances thus far have been more than alarming. The lack of chemistry and understanding between their players is clear to see and it could catch up to them sooner rather than later.

Still, England have managed to avoid 90-minute defeat in each of their last 11 European championship matches. They’ve conceded just two goals in four matches and finished in first place in the Group B standings UEFA Euro standings with a 1-2-0 record.  Their best hope of winning is to stifle their opponents defensively. However, center back Marc Guehi is suspended.

Yakin, Switzerland Have Momentum

Switzerland were mere minutes away from defeating Germany in their last group stage game and winning Group A. However, they conceded a late equalizer and finished in second place, setting up a round of 16 match against defending champions Italy. Switzerland were unphased by the draw and played Italy off the pitch last Saturday.

Ruben Vargas provided an assist and scored as Switzerland defeated Italy 2-0 to advance to the Quarter-Finals in consecutive Euros. They’re a dark horse in UEFA Euro brackets and currently sit at +1400 odds to win the tournament. With the way they’ve been playing, they’ve got a chance.

Switzerland have gone 3-1-0 so far while scoring seven goals and conceding three times. Granit Xhaka has long been one of the best passers in the world and he’s having an excellent tournament thus far. However, he is reportedly still dealing with a muscle injury and it remains to be seen whether it’ll impact him on Saturday.

Defender Silvan Widmer is set to return from a suspension and will bolster the Swiss backline. Manuel Akanji, Fabian Schar and Ricardo Rodriguez have played together plenty and have helped Switzerland to an unbeaten 4-4-0 record in 2024 under Murat Yakin.

Match Analysis & Odds

We find it incredibly difficult to bet against Switzerland given how they’ve already performed against European giants Germany and Italy. We’ve been waiting for England to find their offensive form but it may never come. Switzerland +0.5 sits at -140 odds for this one and one of our England vs Switzerland Euro predictions is that the Swiss will avoid defeat, at least in normal time.

England come in at +120 ATS and moneyline odds and with three straight 90-minute draws, we’d steer clear. A draw is priced at +200 UEFA Euro games odds and it wouldn’t at all be a surprise. Switzerland are +280 moneyline underdogs and we think their line provides some value.

England’s four matches so far have averaged under two goals per game in normal time. The over/under here is set at two goals.
