Austria Ready to Make a Run

Ralf Rangnick recently declined the Bayern Munich job to stay with the Austria national team, which he’s done an excellent job with. The experienced coach doesn’t have any world-class talents on his team but he’s got a hardworking group that’s greater than the sum of its parts.

Rangnick is famous for popularizing “gegenpressing” which means a high-pressing defensive system in which one side tries to win the ball back as quickly as possible. He’s implemented it with this Austria side that are flying at the moment. Austria lost 1-0 to France in their opening match but managed to win their final two group-stage UEFA Euro games. Austria defeated Poland 3-1 and took down the Netherlands 3-2 in thrilling encounters.

Marcel Sabitzer scored the winner for Austria against the Netherlands and the Borussia Dortmund midfielder has been a key player. Rangnick has been rotating his lineups each match to maintain unpredictability and it has been working.

Austria don’t need to rely on any one player for their system to work. That is one of the reasons they could go far in this tournament.

Plus, Austria have only played teams taking part in Euro 2024 this year. They’ve managed an impressive 5-1-1 record and have scored 17 goals in seven matches. The UEFA Euro 2024 odds price them at +1600 to win the title, the sixth-best of any remaining team.

Defender Gernot Trauner is recovering from a thigh injury and is listed as questionable for this match, while energetic winger Patrick Wimmer is out, and suspended.

Two Suspended for Turkey

Turkey started Euro 2024 well, with a 3-1 win over Georgia. However, they failed their first major test of the tournament in their next match. One of the most lopsided UEFA Euro scores has been Turkey’s 3-0 loss to Portugal. Turkey created few chances and the loss meant they needed to get a result in their final match to ensure a round of 16 qualification.

Against the Czech Republic, Turkey played with a man advantage for over 70 minutes. However, it was too close for comfort and it took a 94th minute Cenk Tosun goal for Turkey to win, 2-1. In that match, Turkey also picked up 10 yellow cards.

For Hakan Calhanoglu, the first goalscorer of the match and Turkey’s captain, defender Samet Akaydin, it was their second yellow card of the tournament. So, Calhanoglu and Akaydin are both suspended for Tuesday’s game.

Calhanoglu, an Inter Milan midfielder, is one of Turkey’s main creative forces and Orkun Kokcu is likely to start in his place. Akaydin started all three matches at center back and Merih Demiral may step in.

Real Madrid teenager Arda Guler scored a superb goal in Turkey’s first match and is a bit of a wildcard for Vincenzo Montella. With Calhanoglu out he may be the one tasked with creating chances.

Austria vs Turkey Match Analysis & Odds

We know what to expect from Austria and it’s been a winning formula more often than not. Austria come in as -105 favorites for Tuesday’s match but they have never gone past the round of 16 at the Euros. Meanwhile, Turkey are +320 underdogs and they’ve lost four of their seven matches in 2024.

Don’t expect Austria to repeat March’s 6-1 victory over Turkey but stylistically, and on form, this is a good matchup for Austria. Still, Turkey +0.5 does sit at -115 Austria vs Turkey Euro odds and a draw is priced at +235.

Another consideration for Turkey is that nine of their players are on yellow cards. If any of them get yellow carded on Tuesday, they’ll miss a potential Quarter-Final match.

Under 2.5 goals are priced at -112 odds but Austria have conceded in each of their three games so far. While at around 50 percent implied odds to win in normal time, Austria are -250 favorites to advance. Meanwhile, Turkey come in at +190 to advance.
