Group A: Germany vs Hungary Euro Odds

Hosts Take on Hungary in Stuttgart

Germany got off to the best possible start to Euro 2024, when the hosts took down Scotland, 5-1. Now, Germany will look to grab another win as they take on Hungary in Stuttgart on Wednesday. Hungary lost 3-1 in their opening match to Switzerland and looked out of sorts.  They’re at risk of a group stage exit without picking up at least a point here and it certainly won’t be easy. Ahead of the match, we’ll cover the Germany vs Hungary Euro odds as the Germans are currently -370 favorites.

Dream Start for Germany

It took just ten minutes for Florian Wirtz to get on the board for Germany in their opening match vs. Scotland. Kai Havertz also scored a penalty and provided an assist in an easy 5-1 win over 10-man Scotland. Germany got off to an uneven start under Julian Nagelsmann but they’re now an unbeaten 4-1-0 in 2024. Germany still have a long way to go but they did look like a contender in their opening match.

Wirtz and Jamal Musiala caused all sorts of problems for Scotland on the wings and Havertz seemed to pick up where he left off for Arsenal. Toni Kroos, Ilkay Gundogan and Robert Andrich form a well-balanced midfield in a team with multiple Ballon d’Or candidates. Wirtz is one after an incredible season for Bayer Leverkusen, who were unbeaten vs. German teams all year.

Meanwhile, Kroos won the Champions League with Real Madrid and this is his swansong for Germany before retirement. Toni Kroos’ all time stats for Germany include 12 goals and 16 assists. The most valuable thing he provides is his ball retention and defense-splitting passes for Germany. A win would almost certainly seal knockout stage qualification for Germany and they’ll look to settle things early.

Hungary Underperform in Opener

Hungary came into the tournament as dark horses after an impressive performance in the 2022-23 UEFA Nations League. However, they made a bunch of errors that baffled coach Marco Rossi in their Euro 2024 opener. Switzerland took a 2-0 lead on Saturday over Hungary. Barnabas Varga squandered a good chance but managed to get a goal back for Hungary as he headed in a Dominik Szoboszlai cross.

Switzerland continued to push forward and grabbed a third goal. It was a disappointing start to Hungary’s Euro 2024 campaign. They sit in third place in the Group A UEFA Euro standings and a loss here could be fatal. Cutting down on errors will be the first step for a team that went unbeaten for 14 straight games. They didn’t lose between November 2022 and June 4th of this year when they lost to Ireland in a friendly.

Hungary also went unbeaten in Euro qualifiers and when they’re at their best, they’re much better than what they showed on Saturday. The Magyarok haven’t lost consecutive matches since 2021 and they’ll feel they can remain competitive with a Germany side they’ve beaten before.

Match Analysis & Odds

Hungary’s wingbacks may have a busy day with the likes of Musiala and Wirtz. The oddsmakers aren’t giving Hungary too much of a chance to come away with three points here despite their unbeaten run vs. Germany. Here, the Germany vs Hungary Euro odds list Hungary as +850 underdogs.

Playing in front of their home fans seemed to energize Germany and they’re heavy -370 favorites. Germany -1.5, -2 comes in at even odds, while Hungary +1.5, +2 is priced at -115. If Hungary can weather the initial German storm and quiet the crowd a bit, they can remain competitive in this match.

Hungary have managed to get on the scoresheet in 12 straight matches and that could be the case here. Germany have the ability to pour in the goals and this has the potential to be an open match. Over three goals sit at +105, while the under is currently at -135. After a disappointing performance, expect Hungary to go all out in pursuit of a result.
