Lewandowski Out on Sunday

Poland’s Euro 2024 hopes took a hit when star striker Robert Lewandowski picked up a thigh injury on Monday in a friendly vs Turkey. Poland’s all-time leading scorer will miss their Euro 2024 opener vs the Netherlands and is questionable for the match vs Austria on June 21st.

Uncover Exclusive Picks & Predictions From Our Experts.

The Netherlands’ task becomes just that much easier without Lewandowski to contend with. Still, the Oranje have a few injuries of their own that have weakened the squad. For this Group C opener, we’ll cover the Poland vs Netherlands Euro odds and all of the latest injuries.

Poland vs Netherlands Head-to-Head

This is one of the more one-sided UEFA Euro matchups, at least on a historical basis. Poland haven’t defeated the Netherlands since 1979. Since then, Poland are 0-5-7 vs the Oranje. Over the last four years, Poland and the Netherlands have met four times in the UEFA Nations League.

The Netherlands are 3-1-0 in those matches and they’re also on a 10 game scoring streak vs Poland overall. Still, this is the first-ever opportunity to bet on the Poland vs Netherlands Euro odds.

Poland Unbeaten Under Probierz

Robert Lewandowski has scored 82 goals for the Poland National team in his illustrious career. The rest of the active roster combined has scored 75 times.

Without Lewandowski, Poland aren’t one of the most recommended soccer picks, as it’s unclear where the bulk of their scoring will come from. Karol Swiderski and Nicola Zalewski did get on the scoresheet in Poland’s 2-1 win over Turkey on Monday, though.

Poland barely managed to qualify for Euro 2024 in the first place. They finished in third place behind Czech Republic and Albania in their qualifying group.

After replacing Fernando Santos with Michal Probierz, Poland’s form improved. In the Qualifying Play-off, Poland took down Estonia and beat Wales in penalties. Poland may not be one of the most exciting teams at Euro 2024 but they’ll be pragmatic and could snag a result or two.

Under Probierz, Poland haven’t lost in eight matches. Still, Sunday represents their biggest test of his tenure by far and they’ll have to do it without their star.

Between Zalewski, keeper Wojciech Szczesny, defenders Pawel Dawidowicz and Jakub Kiwior, and midfielders Piotr Zielinski and Przemyslaw Frankowski, there’s at least enough quality to remain competitive.

De Jong, Koopmeiners Out for the Oranje

While Lewandowski is out for Poland for at least this match, Frenkie De Jong and Teun Koopmeiners will miss the entirety of Euro 2024 for the Netherlands. The midfielders were set to play a key role for Ronald Koeman’s side. Now, Tijjani Reijnders, Jerdy Schouten and Joey Veerman is the likely midfield three.

They’re inexperienced at major tournaments and there could certainly be an adjustment period. The Netherlands are in one of the harder Euro 2024 groups, though, with France, Austria and Poland.

To reach the tournament, the Netherlands finished in second place in the Group B UEFA Euro standings in qualifiers. Wout Weghorst, Cody Gakpo and Calvin Stengs all scored three goals in qualifiers but Stengs isn’t in the final squad.

Koeman has one of the best backlines in the tournament to work with, with players like Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Ake, Denzel Dumfries, Lutsharel Geertruida, Stefan de Vrij and Matthijs de Ligt.

Plus, Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay both have experience scoring goals at major tournaments. Xavi Simons and Jeremie Frimpong are big wildcards that could be key for Koeman.

Poland vs Netherlands Match Analysis & Odds

Since the news of Lewandowski’s injury, the Netherlands have moved from -160 to -175 favorites here. This is probably the Netherlands’ most straightforward match on paper and they’ll want to kick things off with three points.

  • The Poland vs Netherlands Euro odds also list Poland at +475 for this match in Hamburg.

A draw currently sits at +300 and Poland would be ecstatic to come away with a point without Lewandowski out. We think that Xavi Simons is the player most likely to unlock Poland’s defense and create chances. With Gakpo, Depay and Weghorst to finish those chances off, the Oranje should get the job done.

  • Poland +1 does show -110 odds, as the Netherlands -1 is priced at even odds. Four of the last five matches between these two teams have been decided by a single goal or finished level.
  • Under 2.5 goals is at -115 and we think the Netherlands’ have a decent shot to keep a clean sheet in this one.
