Euro 2024 Round of 16: Romania vs Netherlands Odds

Oranje Underwhelmed in Group Stage

Romania were surprise Group E winners at Euro 2024 as all four teams finished with the same number of points for the first time in European Championship history. As the Romanians scored the most goals in the group, they won the tiebreaker. Now, Romania are a bit unfortunate to be facing the Netherlands in the round of 16.

Seventh in the latest FIFA World Ranking, the Netherlands finished in third place in Group D with the same 1-1-1 record Romania won Group E with. With a spot in the Quarter-Finals on the line, we’ll take a look at the Romania vs Netherlands odds.

Romania vs Netherlands Head-to-Head

The Netherlands have won each of their last three games against Romania by a three-goal margin or more. They last met in a 2017 friendly as the Netherlands won 3-0, and Memphis Depay was on the scoresheet.

The Netherlands also defeated Romania 2-0 at Euro 2008 as the Oranje finished in first place in the Group C UEFA Euro standings. All-time, Romania are just 1-3-10 against the Netherlands. Romania’s only victory was in a 2007 Euro qualifying match.

Romania Top Wide Open Group E

Romania pulled off one of the shocking results of the tournament when they defeated Ukraine 3-0 in their opening match. It was Romania’s first win at the Euros since 2000, and they came into the match as +285 underdogs. While coach Edward Iordanescu isn’t sure if this is the most talented group in Romanian history, he believes it is the hardest-working.

That was on full display as Romania pounced on Ukrainian mistakes, and Nicolae Stanciu and Razvan Marin scored excellent long-range strikes. In their next two UEFA Euro games, Romania went 0-1-1. They lost 2-0 to Belgium and drew 1-1 to Slovakia in a game that confirmed both teams’ places in the knockout stage.

In fact, all four teams in Group E finished with four points, but Romania won the tiebreaker. This is Romania’s first appearance in a major tournament knockout stage for 24 years. This will be one of the biggest matches in Romanian national team history and if nothing else, bettors can expect Romania to put everything on the line.

Bettors should also be aware that Romania have only picked up a win in one of their seven matches in 2024 while averaging one goal per game. Usual left back Nicusor Bancu is out suspended for Tuesday’s, match and the right-footed Vasile Mogos may replace him.

Netherlands’ Koeman to Switch Things Up

The Netherlands’ Euro 2024 campaign got off to an auspicious start, as they pulled off a 2-1 comeback victory over Poland. After Cody Gakpo’s first-half equalizer, Wout Weghorst came off the bench to seal the three points for the Oranje. In the second match, the Netherlands’ Xavi Simons had a goal controversially disallowed. As a result, the Oranje drew 0-0 against a Kylian Mbappe-less France.

In the group stage closer, the Netherlands fell behind to Austria on three occasions and lost 3-2. Coach Ronald Koeman subbed off midfielder Joey Veerman just 35 minutes into the match after he lost possession 16 times. Despite the loss, the Oranje did manage to go through to round 16 as one of the top four third-place teams.

Koeman is unlikely to select Veerman for this match. We think he’ll play a midfield trio of Jerdy Schouten, Tijjani Reijnders and Xavi Simons. The Netherlands are already shorthanded in midfield. Teun Koopmeiners, Marten De Roon and Frenkie De Jong all suffered pre-tournament injuries.

Defense was supposed to be a strong suit for the Netherlands but they conceded three times to Austria.  Captain Virgil van Dijk was horribly out of position for Austria’s winning goal. Still, Simons was one of the Bundesliga’s best playmakers this season and striker Memphis Depay is experienced at the highest level. Versatile attacker Cody Gakpo scored twice to lead the Oranje in the group stage as well.

At Euro 2020, the Netherlands suffered an upset loss to the Czech Republic in the round of 16 and they’ll look to avoid that fate here. The UEFA Euro 2024 odds price the Oranje at +1200 to win the title.

Romania vs Netherlands Match Analysis & Odds

Despite an uneven group stage performance, the Netherlands are -230 favorites for Tuesday’s match. If they’re able to win, there is certainly a path for them to make a deep run, as they’d take on either Austria or Turkey in the Quarter-Finals.

The Netherlands are one-goal favorites, as the Oranje -1 comes in at -140 Romania vs Netherlands odds and Romania +1 sits at +120. Romania are +750 underdogs to win in 90 minutes and they’ve only managed to win one knockout stage game in their history.

A draw is priced at +325 while under 2.5 goals is at -125 Romania vs Netherlands odds. We do think Romania will create precious few chances in build up play and their best bet is to force errors. If the Netherlands can avoid needless mistakes and successfully progress the ball between lines, they should be able to advance.
