Portugal: Diogo Costa Becomes a National Hero
Portugal opened up Euro 2024 with wins over the Czech Republic (2-1) and Turkey (3-0) and looked like one of the best teams in the tournament in the process. However, their last two matches on the Euro 2024 schedule haven’t gone according to plan. In the group stage finale, coach Roberto Martinez rested most of his key players. Portugal couldn’t find the net and fell 2-0 to Georgia.
Then, even with all of the starters back, Portugal couldn’t break down Slovenia in Monday’s round of 16 match. The match finished 0-0 and went into extra time, where Jan Oblak saved Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty. Ronaldo made up for it in the PK shootout by finishing his spotkick as Portugal won 3-0.
Incredibly, Portugal keeper Diogo Costa saved all three of Slovenia’s penalties. It’s the first time in Euros history a goalkeeper has done that. Portugal have now gone almost four hours of play without a goal despite all of the talent they have.
Ronaldo, now 39, hasn’t scored yet at Euro 2024 and neither has pacy and powerful winger Rafael Leao. Portugal also looked vulnerable defensively at times against Slovenia, especially as 41-year old Pepe couldn’t keep up with Slovenia striker Benjamin Sesko.

France: Struggling in Front of Goal
While Portugal’s struggles in front of goal are bad, France’s are even worse. So far, France have shot the ball 67 times at Euro 2024. They’ve scored three goals, with two opposition own goals and a Kylian Mbappe penalty kick. Even though none of their players have been credited with a goal from open play, France are in the Quarter-Finals.
They finished 1-2-0 in the group stage, which was good enough for second place in the Group D UEFA Euro standings. On Monday, France took on Group E’s second-placed team Belgium in the round of 16.
In the second half, Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen redirected France substitute Randal Kolo Muani’s shot into the goal. France created plenty of chances but that was the game’s only goal. Despite scoring issues, France have a decent shot to win the tournament, especially because their defense has been playing so well.
Les Bleus haven’t conceded yet from open play and have conceded only one goal in four matches. Arsenal center back William Saliba has been a standout performer, along with midfielder N’Golo Kante.
Mbappe has posed a big threat on the left wing but it does seem like his broken nose is affecting him. He’s shying away from certain challenges and is visibly uncomfortable playing in a mask. Midfielder Adrien Rabiot is suspended for the match against Portugal and Eduardo Camavinga could take his place.
