It’s no secret that it’s been a tough stretch for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team. Mercedes was the team all others measured themselves against just a few short years ago. Those days are in the rearview mirror, but Mercedes is having a bit of a resurgence midway through the F1 2024 schedule.

The George Russell results show he hasn’t finished worse than fifth in any of the last four races. He finished fifth just once in the first seven races of the year. Russell earned his second career F1 victory this past weekend in the Austrian Grand Prix.

Russell’s odds before the race didn’t inspire a lot of confidence, as he was +2000, although that was tied with teammate Lewis Hamilton for the fifth-lowest F1 odds. Mercedes weren’t the fastest cars in the field, but they were pretty quick. Russell settled into third place as Max Verstappen and Lando Norris ran in front of him.

Verstappen built a sizable lead, but a slow pit stop allowed Norris to chip away at the lead. When Norris tried to pass, the two cars touched, which punctured the tire of Verstappen’s car and forced Norris to retire. That allowed Russell to take the lead, and he never relinquished it on the way to victory.

Even with the recent strong results of George Russell, Verstappen is in the driver’s seat in the F1 standings. He increased his lead over Norris to 81 points and is well on his way to another title.

Russell Competing Well With Mercedes

Like many F1 drivers, Russell climbed through the ranks, starting in karts and working his way through the Formula 4, Formula 3 and Formula 2 series. He got his chance to compete in Formula 1 for Williams in 2019 and stayed with the team through 2021.

Russell did fill in for Hamilton in a Mercedes in 2020 after Hamilton tested positive for Covid-19. He returned to Williams after Hamilton was cleared for competition.

Russell joined Mercedes on a permanent basis in 2022 and earned his first victory at the 2022 São Paulo Grand Prix, beating Hamilton to the finish line as Mercedes ran 1-2. It was by far the best of the F1 results that year for Mercedes. Russell finished the season with a fourth-place finish in the season championship standings.

It was a struggle at times for Russell in 2023, as he ended-up finishing eighth in the F1 driver’s championship. He knew the George Russell results weren’t up to par and was quick to call the season “a complete disaster.” The lone bright spot from the year was that Mercedes finished second in the Constructors’ Championship.

The 2024 season was looking like another disappointing year for Mercedes until things began to turn around for the team and, particularly for Russell. Russell gave the team its first podium in Canada, finished fourth in Spain and won at Austria.

Hamilton scored his lone podium of the season at Spain, so Mercedes has had three straight Formula 1 races with a podium finish.

Mercedes will enter the biggest race of the year for its two drivers on a high note. Both Russell and Hamilton are from Great Britain and would like nothing more than to give the local fans something to remember.
