Pair of Late Missed Putts by McIroy Opened the Door for DeChambeau

Since Hale Irwin won his third U.S. Open title in 1990, only Ernie Els, Tiger Woods, Lee Janzen, Payne Stewart, Retief Goosen, Brooks Koepka, and now Bryson DeChambeau have won multiple U.S. Open titles.

The Bryson DeChambeau stats show that DeChambeau won the U.S. Open despite shooting his highest score in the final round of the tournament.

DeChambeau finished with a score of 6-under 274 at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. McIlroy was one shot back followed by Patrick Cantlay and Tony Finau at 276. The 30-year-old DeChambeau has won 13 professional events with nine of them coming on the PGA Tour.

It was the eighth time in the last 10 years that a U.S. player won the U.S. Open. As DeChambeau played the final hole on Sunday, “USA, USA, USA” chants could be heard. Bryson DeChambeau played to the crowd in the latter stages of the final round but at one point did ask for quiet so he could seal the seal.

  • Brooks Koepka is the last player to win back-to-back U.S. Open titles as he won in 2017 in Erin Hills and at Shinnecock Hills the following year. DeChambeau currently has +1200 odds to win the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania. Scottie Scheffler, McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, and Jon Rahm are the only golfers with shorter odds.
  • The golf odds have DeChambeau third at +1100 in The Open Championship outright as the final major tournament of 2024 is coming up in July.

DeChambeau Finally Breaks Through

Since winning his first major at the 2020 U.S. Open, Bryson DeChambeau’s stats showed that he had four top-10 finishes in the major tournaments. Two of those came this year when DeChambeau was tied for sixth in the Masters and was second in the PGA Championship.

Heading into this year’s U.S. Open, the last win on the PGA Tour for DeChambeau was at the 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational when he finished one shot ahead of Lee Westwood.

That almost changed at the PGA Championship with an impressive final round of 64. Xander Schauffele finished one shot ahead of DeChambeau to win the title. That set the stage for what happened at the U.S. Open.

Taking the Money

Don’t look for DeChambeau at normal PGA Tour events. He was one of the high-profile golfers who took the money to join the LIV Golf League.

DeChambeau won twice on the LIV tour in 2023. He won by six shots over Mito Pereira in Greenbrier.
Seven weeks later, he edged Anirban Lahiri and Marc Leishman by one shot in Chicago.

When looking at the Bryson DeChambeau stats, he is tied for 41st in fairways hit among LIV golfers, hitting the fairways 52.1% of the time. He is tied for 20th with Patrick Reed with 101 birdies. DeChambeau is the LIV leader with seven eagles.

That last number was the only one that stood out when DeChambeau headed to North Carolina for the U.S. Open.

DeChambeau was in trouble on the final hole as he needed only to make par to win the title.

He hit a brilliant shot out of the bunker and then sank the par putt to win the tournament.

“I felt like I was hitting the driver pretty well today,” DeChambeau said. “It just wasn’t starting exactly where I wanted it to. Ultimately on 13, I knew I had to make birdie there to give myself a chance because Rory was going on a heater, and he slipped up a couple on the way coming in, and I just kept staying the course, focused on trying to hit as many fairways as I could, even though I didn’t. I was not great today with that.

“I got out of trouble really well, and then, man, I can’t believe that up-and-down on the last. That was overall probably the best shot of my life.”

It Gets Gory For Rory

They don’t ask, they ask how many when it comes to golf players at the major championships.

DeChambeau kept plugging away, using his huge tee shots to give himself a chance to win.
He needed some help.

Rory McIlroy hadn’t missed a putt of four feet or less this year but he missed two of them on the final four holes and that kept him from winning the U.S. Open for the first time since 2011.

“Rory is one of the best to ever play,” DeChambeau said after winning his second U.S. Open title. “Being able to fight against a great like that is pretty special. For him to miss that putt, I’d never wish it on anybody. It just happened to play out that way.”

McIlroy was committed to playing in this weekend’s Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut as that is the next golf tournament on the PGA calendar. However, McIlroy posted on social media that he was taking a break.

“The one word that I would describe my career as is resilient. I’ve shown my resilience over and over again in the last 17 years and I will again.

“I’m going to take a few weeks away from the game to process everything and build myself back up for my defense of the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Troon.”
