  • Luis Medina (Oakland) vs Griffin Canning (Los Angeles)

Oakland will have right-hander Luis Medina getting the start in the series opener on Monday. Medina is 1-2 with a 4.71 ERA in four starts this season, all in June after he started the season on the MLB injured list with a sprained right knee.

He’s coming off his first win of the campaign on Wednesday, going 5.2 innings against the Kansas City Royals and allowing one run on six hits while striking out three and walking two.

Right-hander Griffin Canning has been struggling on the mound of late, and he’ll try to turn it around in the series opener. Canning is 2-8 with a 5.02 ERA in 15 starts this season, striking out 54 in 80.2 innings of work.

He’s allowed at least three runs in four of his last five starts, including a loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday. In that game, Canning went five innings and gave up six runs (five earned) on eight hits while striking out four and walking two.

  • Mitch Spence (Oakland) vs Tyler Anderson (Los Angeles)

The Athletics will hand the ball to righty Mitch Spence for Tuesday’s contest. The 26-year-old has made 18 appearances this MLB season, including seven starts, coming into this game with a 4-3 record and 3.86 ERA.

Spence is coming off a season-high seven strikeouts in his last start, taking a no-decision against the Royals on Thursday after going six innings and allowing two runs on six hits, including two home runs.

Left-hander Tyler Anderson has the seventh-best ERA in baseball at 2.48, but he comes into his start on Tuesday with a 6-7 record. Anderson has recorded 63 strikeouts in his 94.1 innings of work in 2024.

He had another tough-luck loss in his last outing, going seven innings against the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday and allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five and walking three but being on the wrong end of a 2-0 result.

âš¾ Game 3 âš¾

  • Joey Estes (Oakland) vs Undecided (Los Angeles)

The series finale will see right-hander Joey Estes make his ninth start of the season for the Athletics. Estes is 2-2 with a 5.53 ERA, having struck out 31 in his 40.2 innings of work.

The 22-year-old was solid in his last outing, going six innings against the Minnesota Twins and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out one and walking one.

The Angels are uncertain who will get the start on Wednesday after the man whose turn it is in the rotation, lefty Patrick Sandoval, was put on the injured list with a left elbow strain on Saturday.

Los Angeles called up right-hander Guillermo Zuniga, but he’s primarily a reliever, so he’s not thought to be an option for the start. This uncertainty makes it hard to put the Angels among your MLB picks today.

Which Team Can Put Up Some Runs?

This series isn’t expected to light up the MLB scoreboard at all, as neither of these baseball teams is among the MLB leaders in most offensive categories.

Oakland comes into the series ranked 28th in baseball in runs with 289, with the Angels not much better, sitting in a tie for 24th with 307 runs. Whichever team can break through with a couple of runs will have a major advantage.

Outfielder Brent Rooker has been the best at producing runs for the Athletics this season, leading the team with 44 RBI. He’s hitting .256 with 14 doubles, two triples, 13 home runs and 27 runs scored.

He’s hoping to turn things around from Sunday, when he had his five-game hit streak snapped with an 0-for-4 day at the plate, which featured four strikeouts.

Los Angeles has been leaning on outfielder Taylor Ward to come up with big hits in 2024, and he’s come through consistently. Ward is batting .240 and has team highs with 12 home runs, 38 RBI and 35 runs scored. He needs to come up big in this series to get the Angels’ offense in gear.

Angels Take Close Series With Rival Athletics

Neither of these teams are among the MLB playoff contenders at this point in the season, but there is some time left. Still, if either of these teams has hopes of even getting into the postseason race, they have to get hot in a hurry.

Los Angeles has shown some potential at times this season, but injuries have slowed it down. Despite that, our Athletics vs Angels MLB predictions give the advantage to the home team, as you should be wagering on Los Angeles to come away with victories in these games.
