Tigers vs Twins Probable Pitching Matchups

  • Tuesday: Tarik Skubal (Tigers); Simeon Woods Richardson (Twins)
  • Wednesday: Jack Flaherty (Tigers); TBA (Twins)
  • Thursday: Kenta Maeda (Tigers); Bailey Ober (Twins)

A Familiar Face Returns to Minnesota

In most series, Kenta Maeda would not be receiving as much attention as fellow Detroit starting pitchers Tarik Skubal and Jack Flaherty as Skubal is in the top five among qualified pitchers in ERA while only two American League pitchers have more strikeouts this season than Flaherty.

However, plenty of eyes will be on the pitcher set to go in the series finale.

Maeda has gone six straight starts without a win. However, he is back in Minnesota after spending three seasons with the Twins. Could that factor into the Tigers vs Twins betting odds? He was 8-5 in 20 home starts during the 2020, 2021, and 2023 seasons for the Twins.

The starter did pitch against the Twins in April but that game was in April. This will be the first time he will pitch in Minnesota as a member of the visiting team.

Ten of Detroit’s last 14 games went under the total.

Twins Starting to Make Their Move

Things were not promising when the Twins were shut out in back-to-back games by the Pittsburgh Pirates to fall to 1-6 in June. They finished the month by going 14-6 with five of those losses coming by one run.

While some of that success can be chalked up to facing struggling Arizona Diamondbacks, Oakland Athletics, Tampa Bay Rays, and Colorado Rockies teams, Minnesota won the final two games against the American League West Division-leading Seattle Mariners to move into sole possession of second place in the AL Central and are currently holding down the second wild-card spot in the American League.

Royce Lewis hit nine home runs in 22 games in June while Carlos Correa and Carlos Santana each hit over .330 and had slugging percentages over .550 in June as Minnesota joined the Houston Astros as the only teams with three qualified hitters with slugging percentages of .560 or higher in June. That is something to consider when it comes to the Tigers vs Twins betting odds.

Seven of Minnesota’s last 10 games finished over the total.

Who’s Hot

  • Andy Ibanez, Detroit Tigers 2B: Ibanez is 8-for-19 with three multi-hit games over the last seven games.
  • Jose Miranda, Minnesota Twins 3B: Miranda is 8-for-18 with four runs and seven RBIs over his last five games.
  • Bailey Ober, Minnesota Twins P: Ober is 2-0 with 12 hits and four runs allowed to go with 27 strikeouts in 21.1 innings in his last three starts.
  • Joey Wentz, Detroit Tigers P: Wentz has not allowed a run in seven of his last eight appearances. He has thrown four scoreless innings versus Minnesota this season.

Who’s Not

  • Kody Funderburk, Minnesota Twins P: Funderburk has given up 12 hits and six runs over nine innings in his last seven appearances.
  • Tyler Holton, Detroit Tigers P: Holton has given up six hits and four runs with three walks in 3.2 innings in his last four outings.
  • Royce Lewis, Minnesota Twins 3B: Lewis has one hit and six strikeouts in his last 25 at-bats.
  • Gio Urshela, Detroit Tigers 3B: Urshela is 1-for-32 with five strikeouts in his last nine games.

Tigers vs Twins Injury Update

Infielders Matt Vierling and Javier Baez join outfielder Kerry Carpenter and pitcher Casey Mize on the MLB injured list.

Pitchers Chris Paddack, Brock Stewart, and Justin Topa join outfielder Alex Kirilloff is out for the Twins.

Tigers vs Twins Betting Preview

With Cy Young candidate Tarik Skubal going in the series opener, it should not catch those who bet online off guard to see the visiting Tigers favored in the opener.

There have been seven runs or less scored in four of Skubal’s last five starts. That is something to consider with the total currently at 7.5 for Tuesday’s game.

Detroit has not been lighting things up, posting a 17-20 record this season as a favorite. Detroit is 3-9 against the run line as the road favorite. Minnesota has covered four of its seven games as the home ‘dog.

Detroit is 22-21 versus the run line on the road compared to a 15-24 mark at home for the Twins.

The teams are a combined 25-16 against left-handed starting pitchers compared to a 60-67 record when facing a right-handed starter.

The weather could be a concern in the opener with a 25% chance of rain.

When looking at MLB box scores, Detroit has won just one of its last eight road games. It has failed to score in Skubal’s last two road starts.

Detroit will start two of the 11 American League pitchers with at least 100 strikeouts this season and that is something to ponder when looking at the player prop options in this matchup of American League Central Division rivals.
