Dodgers vs Giants Betting Preview: Weekend Series Breakdown

Even without Mookie Betts, the Los Angeles Dodgers just keep on rolling. They wrapped up a sweep of the lowly Chicago White Sox this week and have won eight of their last 10 games as they head into a three-game weekend set against the rival San Francisco Giants.

The Giants took three of four from the Chicago Cubs despite their rotation being in shambles, thanks in large part to some great bullpen work.

  • This Dodgers vs Giants preview notes how, interestingly, Friday’s opener is close to a toss-up with the Giants as -110 moneyline favorites but the Dodgers at +160 to win by two or more runs on the runline. The total is a low 7.5 runs.

Los Angeles’ pitching staff has been incredible lately, giving up three runs or fewer in each of the Dodgers’ last six games. With an 8.5-game NL West lead over the San Diego Padres, the Dodgers will likely make the MLB playoffs so the goal right now is to keep pace with the Philadelphia Phillies for the No. 1 overall spot in the NL.

Considering that there are no concerns with the Dodgers’ incredible offense, the resurgence of the pitching staff is a welcome sight.

The Giants were able to stabilize things this week after a five-game losing streak and while things aren’t perfect for San Francisco — the rotation is still a mess — they desperately needed some wins. The offense has perked up a bit and should be getting LaMonte Wade Jr. back this weekend, which is a huge boost.

Dodgers Are Just Good At Everything

It’s unusual for a team to lose a MVP candidate for a long period of time with an injury and essentially not miss a beat, but the Dodgers are an unusual team.

This Dodgers vs Giants betting preview has to note how Los Angeles has been able to keep on rolling even with Betts sidelined as Shohei Ohtani leads the NL in home runs, runs scored, batting average, slugging percentage and OPS while Freddie Freeman, Will Smith and Teoscar Hernández put together All-Star campaigns of their own.

Los Angeles is in the top-five in every major offensive statistical category and while the Dodgers’ lineup is still a bit top-heavy, it almost doesn’t matter when the top is so dominant.

Couple that with the fourth-best rotation ERA and second-best bullpen ERA and you get a ridiculously balanced team that, despite missing a bunch of key batters and pitchers due to injury, looks like either the best or second-best team in the NL.

Even rookie Landon Knack, who will start Friday’s opener, has been awesome and he’ll give way to Cy Young candidate Tyler Glasnow on Saturday and James Paxton — having a nice bounceback season — on Sunday. The MLB scores today and throughout the weekend, on paper, should favor the Dodgers even if the Giants have the betting edge on Friday.

Giants Need Big Start From Webb

Logan Webb and Jordan Hicks have been the only consistent (and healthy) stalwarts in the San Francisco rotation this season.

As Hicks pitched yesterday, Webb gets the call on Friday and no Dodgers vs Giants betting preview would be complete without discussing not only how good Webb is but how he is well-suited to try and slow down Los Angeles. He has a 3.16 ERA in 17 starts with only five home runs allowed and a stellar 2.76 FIP.

He’s a sinkerballer so it makes sense that he doesn’t give us many dingers and, because the home run is such a critical part of the Los Angeles offense, he can limit their damage if he keeps the ball down. He did that very well in his last start against the Dodgers in the middle of May, when he tossed six shutout innings and struck out five (while coaxing seven groundballs).

Lately, Webb has been getting tons of groundball outs, nine or more in each of his last five outings. That bodes well as he tries to get through a lineup that features two guys with strong MLB MVP odds. He’ll run into a lot of trouble if the Dodgers are able to elevate the ball against him, even in a pitcher’s stadium like Oracle Park.

Take Giants On Moneyline

  • Betting against the Dodgers is hard, but this situation may warrant it.. Go with San Francisco straight-up at -110, largely because of Webb’s strengths and the fact that San Francisco may have figured some things out in their impressive series win over the Cubs.

Los Angeles could beat up on the Giants’ bullpen once Webb leaves but he usually gives San Francisco solid length, particularly when he’s throwing strikes and getting groundball outs.

  • The total is a very low 7.5 but the under (-120) is a decent bet with Webb and Knack on the mound. This could be an old-school pitcher’s duel.
