MLB Series Preview: Angels Take Their Hot Streak To The Bay

Los Angeles has won 6 of 7 after taking three of four from the Tigers this weekend

The Los Angeles Angels (36-47) head West this week to take on their instate rival Oakland Athletics (30-56) for three games starting Tuesday at 9:40 p.m. ET / 6:40 p.m. PT at the Oakland Coliseum. In June, the Angles (15-11) were the second most profitable team with 6.75 units won, with only the New York Mets better at +7.35.

Oakland (7-20) was the worst, with 8.90 units lost. The A’s have opened up as a slight game one favorite (-110) with a total of 7.5 over -122. You can bet that the total is about to burst up to 8, so make sure to bet accordingly. Game one can be seen on Bally Sports West and NBC Sports California. Let’s get into our Angels vs Athletics MLB odds preview.

Game One: Jose Soriano (LA) 4-5, 3.48 vs Mitch Spence (Oak) 4-4, 4.35

We don’t see the Oakland Athletics as a favorite much, but here they are at -110, with the Angels at -106. It may not be what the numbers look like at first pitch, but for now, it’s just the ninth time the Athletics are favored. Oakland is 6-2 (+2.69 units) in 2024 in this spot, but just 14-16 since 2022 (-5.32).

That gives you an idea of how bad this organization has been over the last three seasons after being favored in just 30 games out of 410. To put that in further perspective, the Angels, who haven’t exactly been a feared franchise, have been a favorite 166 times (91-75, -12.44).

Soriano will be making his 13th start of the season, hoping to add to back-to-back terrific starts against the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks, where the 25-year Dominican native allowed just three earned runs in 14 innings (1.93 era), allowing 11 hits, 3 walks and 6 k’s. In his last five starts, Soriano is 3-1 with a 3.21 ERA while allowing 27 hits in 33.2 innings.

This will be his first start on June 12th because of a 15-day stop on the IL with an abdominal infection. Mitch Spence will look to rebound after losing to the Angels six days ago (7-5). Spence allowed six earned, 8 hits, 1BB, 6 k’s, 1 HR in 5.1 innings. It was the fifth straight game Oakland has dropped with Spence on the hill, running their season record behind Spence to 6-13. Spence is 0-2 with a 4.80 ERA during the Athletics’ losing streak, but Oakland has only given him 3.80 runs of support and 3.16 overall.

Despite what Oakland’s MLB implied runs statistic may suggest, we recommend getting on your free MLB odds app and jumping on the over in game one. We continue our Angels vs Athletics MLB odds preview with a peek at game two.

Game Two: Davis Daniel (LA) 1-0, 0.00 vs Joey Estes (Oak) 2-3, 5.24

Davis Daniel will be making his second start of his Major League career an outstanding debut against the Detroit Tigers, firing eight innings of four-hit ball with no walks and eight strikeouts in eight innings.

In his career, the former Auburn Tiger has given up just three earned and 11 hits in 20.1 innings (1.33 era). At AAA Salt Lake this season, Daniel was 5-4 with a 5.33 ERA, but using Pacific Coast League numbers to handicap games is difficult because it’s like playing in Coors Field for 80% of your games, so take that ERA with a grain of salt.

Joey Estes has put together a couple of solid outings, with the last being against the Angels after allowing two earned runs in 5.2 innings on June 26th, a 5-2 loss. Over his previous two starts, Estes has allowed four earned in 11.2 innings (3.09), but 13 over his last four starts (6.05 era) including six against Minnesota three starts ago in just 2.2 innings. We recommend looking to the Angels in game two.

Thursday: Roansy Contreras (LA) 1-0, 3.82 vs JP Sears (Oak) 4-7, 5.00

The series culminates with the newly acquired Roansy Contrera taking the hill for the Angels against veteran JP Sears who has not factored in an Athletics win since May 25th.

Oakland is just 1-5 in the lefty’s last six starts but will hope to build off his last outing after allowing three earned in six innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Contreras was picked up from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the middle of May and since has been a solid addition allowing six earned runs, 12 hits, seven walks, and 15 k’s in 16.2 innings (3.24 era).

This will be his 11th appearance for Los Angeles but his second start after limiting the Athletics to one earned run in three innings five days ago, a 5-2 Angels win. Over his last six appearances, Contreras owns a 3.27 era in 11 innings.

We recommend that your Thursday MLB picks and parlays card should have the over in this match-up. That’s it for your Angels vs Athletics MLB odds preview, all the best with your wagers this week.
