The Tigers Are In Line For a Road Series Win This Weekend

Tigers vs Angels Betting Preview: Detroit Has More Potential

The Los Angeles Angels will begin a four-game home series against the Detroit Tigers. Both teams are far from a potential AL Wild Card spot.

With the MLB Trade Deadline approaching fast, both teams could look to become sellers after the All-Star break.

That said, one team has to win each night.

  • The Tigers are the heavy favorites on the road in this series. They’ll begin Game 1 with ace pitcher Jack Flaherty on the mound. With Flaherty, the Tigers are -160 on the monyline. However, the total is at 8 with the Over juiced to -115. But that’s mainly because the Angels are giving Davis Daniel his first MLB start of his career tonight.

Here’s a look at the Tigers vs Angels betting preview for this four-game American League series.

What Happened to Matt Manning?

The Detroit Tigers could certainly use some help in the pitching department. They had hoped Matt Manning could eventually be that help.

Manning was a former first-round pick in 2016 and isn’t dominating in Triple-A. However, he’s shown flashes and is working on improving his delivery.

He currently has a 5.68 ERA in 38 innings at Triple-A, and his walk rate is higher. Manning has also watched lefties hit .304 against him.

Goodbye, Jose Suarez

Los Angeles announced that it had sent Jose Suarez to Triple-A. He ultimately passed through waivers unclaimed and is headed to Triple-A with the Angels system.

He can reject a trip to Triple-A and elect free agency if he wishes. But that would also mean forgetting his remaining salary.

Tigers vs Angels Betting Odds For Game 1:

RL: Tigers -1.5 (-105) ML: Tigers -160, O/U: 8 -115/-105

⚾ Game 1 ⚾

Thursday, 9:38 pm ET
Jack Flaherty vs Davis Daniel

The Tigers will throw their ace, Jack Flaherty, to set the tone for the four-game series. Flaherty is one of the best pitchers in the MLB, holding a 2.92 ERA on the season. In addition, he’s held opponents to a .078 ISO and wOBA of .184 over the last month. He’s also earned 33.3% of strikeouts and has kept walks below 5% in the previous 30 days.

He’ll face an Angels lineup that has hit a .127 ISO and wOBA of .257 against righties over the last 30 days. Therefore, it’s likely Flaherty will throw a gem tonight.

Meanwhile, the Angels will give Davis Daniel his first career start. Daniel only struck out 17.3% of batters last season but held opponents to a .291 wOBA. He wasn’t bad, but he doesn’t have much big-league experience.

  • Therefore, we’d side with the Tigers in Game 1 of the series at -170. The Angels certainly won’t light up the MLB scoreboard tonight.

⚾ Game 2 ⚾

Friday, 9:38 pm ET
Kenta Maeda vs Zach Plesac

In Friday’s matchup, the Tigers will give Kenta Maeda the ball. Maeda has a 6.00 ERA after facing 233 batters this season. He’s been terrible against righties lately, allowing a .231 ISO and wOBA of .416 to his last 43 righties faced.

The Angels have a couple of right-hander batters consistently hitting righties right now. That list includes Logan O’Hoppe and Zach Neto.

The Angels will roll with Zach Plesac. He’s a righty who has struck out below 5% of batters since starting with the Angels. Plesac has also allowed a .395 ISO and wOBA of .435 to his first 41 batters and has an 8.68 ERA this year.

The Tigers don’t have the most consistent lineup, but any MLB lineup could destroy Plesac with these numbers. This is one of the more exciting MLB baseball matchups. Let’s back the Over in the second matchup.

⚾ Game 3 ⚾

Saturday, 10:07 pm ET
Reese Olson vs Griffin Canning

Although Reesee Olson has struggled against lefties, he’s still held his last 119 batters to a .186 ISO and wOBA of .361. It’s not great, but he’s facing an Angels lineup with four lefties with an ISO of .117 in the last month against righties. If Olson doesn’t get beat by lefties, he’ll throw a gem against the Angels.

With those numbers, the Angels are unlikely to do much damage against Olson.

The Angels will counter with Griffin Canning. Canning has struggled badly against lefties, too. However, Canning has improved over the last month, holding teams to a .176 ISO and wOBA of .330 with more than 53% of ground balls.

Canning won’t blow many hitters away with his low strikeout rate, but he’ll give the Tigers a chance to win. One of our favorite MLB predictions for Saturday is the Under in Game 3.

⚾ Game 4 ⚾

Sunday, 4:07 pm ET
Casey Mize vs Tyler Anderson

In the finale, Casey Mize will pitch for the Tigers. He’s 1-6 with a 4.54 ERA. But that’s a bit unfair. He’s pitched somewhat well over the last 30 days. Mize has held teams to a .122 ISO and a wOBA of .346 with 47.4% of ground balls.

While his strikeouts aren’t super high, Mize should start to see a boost in his numbers if he continues this level of play.

Conversly, the Tigers will face their first lefty of the series. Tyler Anderson will man the mound for the Angels. He’s got a 2.63 ERA, but he’s also allowed a .167 ISO and wOBA of .341 to his last 152 batters. Furthermore, Anderson has walked 14.5% of batters over the previous month and has only struck out 13.8% of batters.

Mize should improve, and Anderson should regress. Let’s take the Tigers in the final game of this Tigers vs Angels betting series.
