Can The New York Liberty Get Back On Track?

The New York Liberty will look to return to the win column with a home game against the Los Angeles Sparks. New York had been on an eight-game winning streak until it lost to Phoenix, 99-93 a couple of days ago.

The Los Angeles Sparks have lost four consecutive games and just announced that their No. 2 overall pick, Cameron Brink, is done for the season with a torn ACL.

Not only does that affect her season with the Sparks, but now she won’t be able to play in the 3X3 Olympics for Team USA.

• The Sparks are 4-11 on the season and 14.5-point underdogs against New York tonight.

Sparks vs Liberty Trends

Although the New York Liberty has gone 12-3 on the moneyline, they’re just 6-9 against the spread this season. New York began the season slow, but they’ve since won five of their last seven games against the spread.

Meanwhile, the Liberty have hit the Over in one more game than the Under this year.

The Sparks are 6-8-1 against the spread despite being 4-11 overall. They’ve hit the Under in nine of 15 games this season.

This will be the first of four head-to-head meetings this season. The Liberty won in the previous four games, but the Sparks covered.

Torn ACL For Cameron Brink

Cameron Brink tore her ACL in a non-contact injury a couple of days ago. Yesterday, it was released that she had a Torn ACL.

Brink was the No. 2 overall pick and ultimately played like a top-three rookie this season.

The Sparks will likely give more minutes to Li Yueru, who came into the league as a rookie with the Chicago Sky last season.

Li scored a career-best 18 points against the Storm earlier this month and had played extended minutes when Brink got injured in that game.

Per 36 minutes, Brink scored 14.2 points and hauled in 10.6 rebounds. She’ll be missed.

Are The Liberty The Team To Beat?

The New York Liberty fell short of a WNBA Title against the Las Vegas Aces last season. But after a sensational start to this season, the Liberty are now ahead of the Aces in many power rankings, including The Athletic’s.

New York’s offense has length and athleticism. Look at the Sabrina Ionescu stats, Jonquel Jones, and Breanna Stewart. They’ve found their identity with Courtney Vandersloot out due to personal reasons.

Maybe this could be the year for the Liberty after all.

Will It Be Another Down Year For Los Angeles?

The Los Angeles Sparks used the second overall selection in the WNBA Draft to select Cameron Brink out of Standford.

They already had a miserable season last year and hoped a player of Brink’s caliber could at least push them forward.

• She has been playing well. Brink added 7.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game this season.

For a rookie, these are really good numbers.

Remember, after the college basketball season, the draft happens a couple of weeks later, and the games begin soon after. They don’t have a real training camp or the summer league to prepare.

The Sparks will rely on Dearica Hamby and another rookie, Rickea Jackson, now that Brink is done. Both have averaged double figures.

• Hamby has added 18.3 points per game with 10.7 rebounds per night.

To boot, Jackson has earned 10.3 points in 24 minutes per game. Ultimately, the Sparks have enough depth at the forward and center positions.

However, the Sparks’ issue is the guard spot. They don’t have a single player averaging ten points at point guard or shooting guard.

Instead, Kia Nurse leads the guards with only 9.1 points per game. It’s one of the main reasons why the Sparks are 10th in scoring and 11th in net points per game.

• Also, Los Angeles is shooting 42% from the field, allowing 103.1 points per 100 possessions.

The Liberty have the second-best offense in the WNBA, scoring 86.6 points per game. New York won’t have Nyara Sabally or Vandersloot, but the Liberty still has four players scoring in double figures. The Liberty team scored 104.4 points per 100 possessions, which is the best in the WNBA.

Furthermore, the Liberty has held opponents to a 41.9% field goal percentage and has allowed just 1.02 points per scoring attempt.
