Commissioner’s Cup Results

The Minnesota Lynx pulled off a close victory over the New York Liberty to win their first Commissioner’s Cup championship last week. Bridget Carleton and Napheesa Collier were offensive powerhouses for Minnesota, putting up 23 and 21 points each. Their defense was equally impressive, shutting down New York’s dominant player, Jonquel Jones, who couldn’t score a single field goal and was held to just three points in 34 minutes.

Despite strong performances by Breanna Stewart (24 points, 11 rebounds)  and Sabrina Ionescu (23 points, 10 rebounds, four assists) for the Liberty, the tide turned in the 3rd quarter. Minnesota went on a crucial 10-0 run that New York just couldn’t overcome. The Liberty’s struggles were compounded by a high number of turnovers, giving Minnesota crucial opportunities. In the end, the Lynx held on for a narrow 94-89 victory.

The Lynx outshot the Liberty overall in the game as well. Each team took 69 shots but the Lynx converted on 47.8% of them while the Liberty only made 44.9%. Their three point percentage showed an even greater disparity, with the Lynx making 48.3% of their attempts and the Liberty making 41.4%.

Top of the League

The Liberty are currently the number one seed in the Eastern Conference at 16-3 after overtaking the Connecticut Sun within the last couple of weeks. The Liberty have won four games in a row (not including the Commissioner’s Cup) and are now the number one overall seed in the WNBA. The Liberty is led by Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and Jonquel Jones. Stewart currently has the fourth longest odds to win MVP at +4100.

She leads the team in scoring with 19.8 points per game (sixth in the league), averages 8.7 rebounds and leads the team in steals and blocks with 2.2 steals and 1.4 blocks a game. Ionescu is leading the team in assists with 6.5 per game, and chipping in 18.8 points per game (eighth in the league) as well. Jones is scoring 16.2 points per game and is top ten in the league in rebounds at 8.6 per game.

The Lynx are 14-4 and are the number one seed in the Western Conference, number three seed overall. The Lynx boast a talented roster anchored by MVP hopeful Napheesa Collier, whose odds of winning the award are currently the second shortest at +2000. Joining her are sharpshooter Kayla McBride and the versatile Courtney Williams..

Statistically, Collier is a force to be reckoned with. She paces the Lynx in both scoring (averaging 20.9 points per game, second in the league) and rebounding (grabbing 10.4 per game, good for third in the league). Meanwhile, McBride contributes a steady 15.8 points per game, and Williams is the team’s top facilitator, averaging 5.3 assists per game (top ten in the league).

Can the Liberty Redeem Last Week’s Loss?

These teams have faced each other two times this season, and the Lynx have taken both games. Both times the Liberty were over five point favorites, and both times the Lynx won straight up. The Lynx are 14-5 against the spread this season and the Liberty are 7-13. At home the Liberty are 1-10 against the spread and the Lynx are 7-2 away.

We believe that once again the oddsmakers are underestimating the Lynx in the Lynx vs Liberty WNBA betting. It seems like the oddsmakers have been wrong about the Lynx all season long, and they have been covering the spread at a strong rate. The Liberty have a great overall record but the oddsmakers are giving them too wide of margins to win by and they are not covering the spread. The Lynx will cover this one again and may even get their third win in a row against the Liberty.
