A Loss to the Best

The Atlanta Dream struggled offensively in their recent match against the Connecticut Sun, ending in a 69-50 loss on Sunday. Despite a solid performance from Tina Charles, who secured a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, the Dream could not overcome their poor shooting night.

Atlanta shot a season-low 28.4% from the field and made only 3-of-16 3-pointers, marking their worst home shooting performance this season.

The game, part of the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup, saw the Dream trailing 39-27 at halftime after Connecticut ended the first half on a decisive 12-2 run.

Atlanta’s struggles continued into the third quarter, where they scored only two points during a long stretch, giving the Sun a larger lead.

Although the Dream improved slightly by making four of their final five shots and converting five of six free throws in the third quarter, they still trailed 57-43 heading into the fourth.

In the final quarter, Atlanta’s offensive difficulties persisted, as they went 3-for-16 from the field and missed both free throw attempts. This offensive slump resulted in their lowest scoring output, 23 points below their previous season low.

The Dream’s total of 50 points was the second-fewest points allowed by Connecticut this season.

DeWanna Bonner led the team with 18 points and 10 rebounds for the undefeated Connecticut Sun. DiJonai Carrington contributed 15 points. Alyssa Thomas narrowly missed a triple-double with 14 rebounds, 11 assists, and eight points.

  • The Sun’s solid shooting, at 42.4% from the field and 6-of-18 from 3-point range, helped them maintain their perfect record at 8-0.

Atlanta will look to bounce back after their disappointing loss, but the Liberty are an equally dangerous foe.

Commissioner’s Cup Win

Breanna Stewart’s season-high 33 points and 14 rebounds led the New York Liberty to an 88-75 victory over the Chicago Sky on Tuesday night.

The game saw Chicago’s rookie, Angel Reese, ejected in the fourth quarter after receiving two technical fouls. Sabrina Ionescu contributed 24 points, aiding New York in securing their fourth consecutive win.

After a close game at halftime, in the fourth quarter, New York surged ahead with a 15-2 run. Specifically, this run included 10 consecutive points, extending their lead to 80-68. During this period, Stewart and Ionescu each scored six points.

Betnijah Laney-Hamilton added 14 points for New York, which improved to 8-2 and avenged their previous loss to Chicago on May 23. Jonquel Jones, who had a slow start, finished with five points and 12 rebounds.
