Sunday Night Entertainment

The last time these two teams played was on Sunday, and it was an entertaining nail-biter. The Wings edged out the Sparks by one point, winning 84-83. After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Wings pulled ahead and led the game for most of the second and third quarters. Then, in the fourth quarter, the Sparks came back, briefly taking a lead with four minutes left in the game, but eventually falling to Dallas.

The Wings were led by Arike Ogunbowale who had 20 points but shot poorly, going 7-of-30 from the field and scoreless from three (eight attempts). Monique Billings’s 18-point 12-rebound double was also key to the Wing’s success. Each player in the Dallas starting lineup put up double-digit scoring efforts.

Although the Sparks lost, there is reason for excitement in Los Angeles. Sunday’s game marked a huge night for rookie Cameron Brink, who scored her career-high 21 points in 24 minutes of playing time (she had early foul trouble). She also chipped in three blocks and went 3-of-6 from long distance. Dearica Hamby chipped in with 19 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.

Wings and Sparks’ Last Games

The Wings lost their third straight game on Wednesday to the defending champion Las Vegas Aces. Ogunbowale had a big night scoring 31 points and dropping seven assists, and Teaira McCowan had a big double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds.

Although the Wings put up 81 points, their defense wasn’t enough to overcome the powerful Vegas offense. The Aces put up a whopping 95 points in their win, led by All-Star and MVP favorite A’ja Wilson’s 36 points and 12 rebounds. Kelsey Plum also put up a 20-point effort in the win.

The Sparks also lost their third straight game Wednesday, and it was even more of a blowout than the Wings game. The Sparks lost 62-86 to the top seed in the West, Minnesota Lynx. This was the third win in a row for the Lynx.

The Sparks put up only 12 points in the first quarter and were not able to make back their early deficit. Only Hamby reached double-digit scoring for the Sparks, on a night when nobody seemed to be able to get it going. The team shot a terrible 26% from the field and only 14.3% from three-point land.
