Sputtering Mercury Face Last Place Dallas on the Road

Mercury vs Wings Odds, Projections and More

The Mercury vs Wings odds are here and the Phoenix Mercury are road favorites at -5. They are -220 to win the game straight up and the Dallas Wings are +172 to get the win at home. The total is set for 170.5.

The Mercury look to snap a two-game skid when they visit the Wings on Wednesday. Both teams only have six games before the WNBA season Olympic break and will try to enter the break on a higher note than they’ve been playing klately.

Uncover Exclusive Picks & Predictions From Our Experts.

Phoenix is coming off an 83-72 home loss to Connecticut, fatigue a factor after three games in four days. Veterans Diana Taurasi and Rebecca Allen missed the game with back injuries. Despite the loss, Kahleah Copper and Brittney Griner kept the offense afloat with 21 points each, and Natasha Cloud notched a double-double (18 points, 10 assists). However, the bench struggled, and Phoenix’s outside shooting went cold and Griner put up a measly two rebounds in the game.

Dallas is in dire need of a win, having dropped 13 of their last 14 games. Their lone bright spot was a home victory over Minnesota on June 27. Arike Ogunbowale continues to score and put up big numbers, leading the team with 21 points in their recent loss to Seattle. Natasha Howard and Odyssey Sims chipped in, but a disastrous third quarter sealed their fate.

Injuries have ravaged the Wings’ roster. All-Star Satou Sabally hasn’t played all season, and Natasha Howard missed significant time.

With our Mercury vs Wings odds, we take a look at the WNBA scores and odds and these teams’ previous matchups to see if we can find an edge for Wednesday’s game.

The Current Team Status

The Mercury are 9-10 on the season and are currently the fourth seed in the Western Conference and sixth in the overall league standings.  Kahleah Copper, Diana Taurasi, and Brittney Griner lead the Mercury. Copper is the team’s top scorer at 21.8 points per game, but Griner is close on her tail averaging 20 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.3 rebounds since her return from injury. Natasha Cloud leads the team in assists with 7.3 per game and in steals with 1.7 per game. Diana Taurasi is holding down a veteran leadership role scoring 16.6 points per game and adding 4.7 rebounds.

The Wings are having a rough season. They are 4-15 overall, good for last place in the Western Conference and last place in the league standings. They are led by Arike Ogunbowale who is second in the league in scoring at 23.7 points per game. She also averages 4.9 assists and 2.8 steals per game (leading the team in both). Natasha Howard is the next high scorer on the Wings with 15.1 points per game. She also averages seven rebounds a game.

Wings and Mercury Betting Trends

The Mercury might be a tempting road pick against the struggling Wings considering their recent form. Phoenix has won half of their last ten games (5-5) while Dallas has only managed one victory. Offensively, the Mercury holds a slight edge, averaging 81.8 points per game compared to the Wings’ 79.7. However, Dallas boasts a worse defense, allowing 88.0 points per game on average, compared to Phoenix’s 84.6.

The Mercury have covered the spread in 11 out of 18 games (11-8), with a stronger record at home (7-4 against the spread (ATS)) compared to away games (4-4 ATS). The Wings, on the other hand, struggle to cover spreads, doing so only in 7 out of 19 games (7-12). Their struggles are even more pronounced on the road, where they’ve only covered the spread in 5 out of 12 games (5-7 ATS).

Based on recent form and ATS record, the Mercury appears to be the more favorable bet on the road.

Mercury Poised for a Win

With a few key players’ injury status still up in the air, this game is hard to predict for free WNBA picks. That being said, even with injuries the Mercury are a much more well-rounded team and have had more success on the road this season. The -5 spread is maybe a little too wide for our taste, but taking the Mercury to win straight up at -220 seems like a solid bet with the Mercury vs Wings odds.
