The Mystics Are Still Seeking First Win

Mystics vs Liberty Preview: New York Might Be Overrated Right Now

The Washington Mystics are still looking for their first win of the season. They’ve come close in a few games but haven’t put a complete game together.

They’ll look to put that complete game together against the New York Liberty on the road tonight.

Washington has allowed nearly ten more points than they’ve scored this season. They’re also weak on the glass and have shot below 40% for the season.

While they’ve got three scorers averaging 10.4 or more points, they’ll be without Brittney Skyes in tonight’s game due to an ankle injury.

That already sets up the Mystics for a difficult game against the Liberty.

That said, the Liberty are -15 against the spread, with the total at 161.5. Ultimately, bookmakers are giving the Mystics under a 12% chance of winning their first game of the season tonight.

Here’s a look at our Mystics vs Liberty preview for one of four games on the WNBA slate tonight.

Mystics vs Liberty Preview & Trends

Although the Mystics are 0-7 straight-up, Washington has still gone 3-3-1 against the spread. That’s much better than the Liberty, who have gone just 1-6 against the spread.

The Liberty might be 5-2 overall, but they’ve underperformed to start the season.

Meanwhile, both teams have gone Over in four of seven games this season.

New York is also 7-3 against Washington over the last ten head-to-head matchups. However, the Mystics are 6-3 against the spread and the total has hit Over in five of the last ten, with one game being a push.

The Mystics have already played the Liberty once this season. They lost 85-80 at home but covered as 11.5-point favorites. This game will be tougher since they’ll be on the road.

You’ll want to check out our WNBA picks for this game below.

31-Year-Old Rookie on Washington

Julie Vanloo is 31 and playing her first season in the WNBA. She’s already fifth on the team in scoring through seven games and has started five games. She’s also scoring 8.4 points per game with 5.4 assists a night.

Vanloo has won the Eurobasket Championship with the Belgian National Team and ultimately intrigued Mystics General Manager Mike Thibault enough to make the roster.

Breanna Stewart Taking Advantage Of Inflection Point

The WNBA has the most eyes on its product ever. While Caitlin Clark is a big reason why, Breanna Stewart is ultimately the league’s MVP.

She knows she has to take advantage of the new eyes on the WNBA and talked to the media about finding ways to sustain the WNBA’s success to start the season.

With a new media rights deal in place, charter planes, and a potential new CBA, this year’s WNBA season is in a great place. In addition, WNBA betting is at an all-time high. There are no complaints here!

Mystics Can Keep It Close

The Washington Mystics are one of the WNBA’s worst teams. However, they’ve been better at covering games this season than the Liberty.

In the first game of the season, the Mystics were double-digit underdogs but held for several minutes. Ultimately, Washington shot just 39.7% from the field but added more assists and earned six more turnovers in the loss.

In that game, Washington shot better from downtown against the Liberty and never led the Liberty push over ten points.

The Liberty was expected to be this year’s best offense. They’ve done well in some areas but have struggled in others.

For example, the Liberty have allowed 77.3 points per game, which is second-best in the WNBA. Yet they’ve only scored 83 points per game, which is sixth-best. Last season, New York was a top-two offense behind the Las Vegas Aces.

But they’re only scoring 99.7 points per 100 possessions and have shot 4th in field goal percentage.

While the Mystics are the worst offense in the WNBA, scoring 89.1 points per 100 possessions, the Liberty aren’t exactly putting up crazy numbers on the defensive end.

Opponents have shot 34.3% from downtown against New York. Meanwhile, Washington’s best area on offense is probably from three. The Mystics have hit 33% from downtown and have a three-point rate of 36.2%. Washington has ultimately scored 36% of points from three, which is second-best in the WNBA.

As long as the Liberty are giving up three-point shots and the Mystics are making them at a reasonable rate, we’d back the Mystics to at least cover the 15-point spread on the road per our Mystics vs Liberty preview.
