Will Clemson Be A Part of the 12-Team College Football Playoff Field?
Clemson was 8-3 outright as a favorite during the 2023 season with a 5-0 mark as a home favorite. The Tigers split their two games when listed as the underdog. The Tigers were just 5-6 against the spread (ATS) when favored. In ACC play, only Syracuse had a worse ATS record than Clemson did during the 2023 season. Keep that in mind when looking at the 2024 Clemson Tigers stats.
Clemson has lost seven regular-season conference games since the start of the 2018 season and four of them came during the 2023 season so this feels like a bit of a make-or-break season.

Tigers Stand Pat
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has stuck his neck out by not bringing in a transfer. The only other Football Bowl Subdivision teams that have no incoming transfers are the service academies and there is red tape involved for Army, Air Force, or Navy.
There are no such issues for Clemson so it is a case of Swinney being a tad stubborn. The Tigers saw safety Andrew Mukuba, the third-leading tackler for Clemson a season ago, land at Texas. Cornerback Toriano Pride Jr. is now at Missouri while edge rushers David Ojiegbe and Adam Kissayi transferred to Pittsburgh and Minnesota. Time will tell how that philosophy impacts the 2024 Clemson Tigers stats.
If there is a silver lining, it could be that quarterback Cam Ward, who went from Washington State to Miami, is the only incoming transfer rated in the top 25 by the 247sports.com database.
Rivals Florida, Miami, and Louisville got 17, 15, and 31 transfers so time will tell if Clemson’s decision to rely exclusively on players it signed out of high school is the way to go.
Clemson did have the No. 2 ranked recruiting class among ACC teams, trailing only Miami.
Receivers TJ Moore and Bryant Wesco and tight end Christian Bantancur are all top-100 recruits.
Championship Odds: Tigers Have Some Work to Do
There was plenty of frustration in ACC country when an undefeated Florida State team was left out of last season’s College Football Playoff field.
With the College Football Playoff expanding from four to 12 teams, that shouldn’t be an issue as the champion from the top-five rated conferences will earn spots in the CFP field. The ACC champion is likely earning one of the top four spots and a first-round bye.
Clemson was among the four teams selected for the CFP field five years in a row but the Tigers last played in the CFP in 2020.
Getting into the playoff field is one thing, but taking down teams from the SEC or the Big Ten could be a different matter. There are 11 teams with better championship odds than the Tigers. Nine of them come from either the Big Ten or the SEC.
It shouldn’t take long to figure out where the Tigers stand as the season opener comes against national title front-runner Georgia on Aug. 31 with the NCAA football odds listing Clemson as a 13.5-point underdog.
Conference Odds: Tigers Ready to Rebound?
It is Florida State and not Clemson that comes into the season as the favorite in the ACC. However, there isn’t much of a difference between the conference odds for the Tigers and the Seminoles.
Playing North Carolina State in the ACC opener on Sept. 21 will be no easy task even if the game is in Death Valley. The Tigers are currently a seven-point favorite according to the NCAAF odds.
- Clemson will be on the road for what could be the game of the year in the ACC on Oct. 5 with host Florida State currently a four-point favorite with -155 odds to win the game outright. The Tigers don’t face Miami in the regular season.
The Tigers’ chances to reach the ACC title game could be decided in a five-game stretch against Florida State, Wake Forest, Virginia, Louisville, and Virginia Tech.
Regular Season Wins: Consider Going With Clemson to Go Over 9.5 Wins
Even if Clemson falls short in the matchups with Georgia and Florida State, the Tigers could top the 9.5 expected win total by winning the other games.
It is very possible that the Tigers will be favored in the other 10 games.
Cade Klubnik could be one of the top quarterbacks in the ACC with running back Phil Mafah no longer having to split carries with Will Shipley. Most of the top receivers are returning so the 2024 Clemson Tigers stats could result in Klubnik having a big season if the offensive line holds up. There are some key losses on defense that need to be addressed.
When looking at the NCAA football scores, the 28-7 loss to Duke in the 2023 season opener was not a good look but Clemson lost its other three games by seven, eight, and seven points. Perhaps Clemson isn’t too far away from being a major player in the national championship race again.

To Make Playoffs: Tigers Ready for the National Stage
There could be multiple ACC teams in the College Football Playoff field so even if Florida State or another team keeps Clemson from winning the ACC title, that won’t prevent the Tigers from being in the conversation to make the 12-team CFP.
Florida doesn’t need to beat Georgia to have a chance to make it into the playoffs. A competitive showing in a loss could prove quite beneficial when the selection committee sits down to look at Clemson’s body of work.
The ACC is lagging behind the SEC and the Big Ten but looks to be a step ahead of the Big 12 so that could help Clemson’s case of being among the 12 teams invited to compete for the national title.

- Cade Klubnik is well back at +4000 in the odds of winning the Heisman Trophy. There are 18 players with better odds to win the Heisman than Klubnik.
The Georgia game will give Klubink a national audience and even if he struggles, the fact that the matchup with Georgia comes in August might help the Heisman voters overlook a difficult early-season showcase.
