2024 NCAAF Cheat Sheet: Virginia Tech Hokies Stats & Odds

Experience Key to 2024 Virginia Tech Hokies Stats

The Virginia Tech Hokies have tumbled down the ranks in college football over the last decade. In fact, they’ve had just four winning NCAAF seasons since Frank Beamer retired following the 2015 campaign. Only two of those years ended with bowl victories.

Can the Hokies climb back up the pecking order? It’s a daunting task, but they made considerable progress last year under Brent Pry.

We preview the potential 2024 Virginia Tech Hokies stats in our college football team preview.

Pry Looks to Restore Order

Virginia Tech took an important step forward last season, winning seven NCAAF games and returning to a bowl game. The Hokies went 5-2 down the stretch, including a 41-20 victory over Tulane in the Military Bowl.

It was their first bowl win since the 2016 Belk Bowl.

As the Hokies trudge forward, there’s pressure on coach Brent Pry to build on his triumphant second season. Fortunately, the bulk of the roster is slated to return, including quarterback Kyron Drones.

While realignment has brought a new wave of teams to the ACC in California, SMU and Stanford, Virginia Tech is projected to be among the conference’s top dogs.

  • The Hokies have climbed from +1400 to +1200 to win the ACC, the sixth-best odds on the board.

Tradition is strong at Virginia Tech. Prior to the COVID-shortened 2020 season, the Hokies made 27 straight bowl appearances. Most of that success, of course, came under legendary coach Frank Beamer, who won 238 games over 29 seasons in Blacksburg.

The height was an appearance in the 2000 national championship game, where the Michael Vick-led Hokies lost 46-29 to Florida State.

Virginia Tech has averaged just 5.2 wins over the last four seasons, so re-establishing itself as a perennial contender in the NCAA football rankings is paramount.

What can bettors expect this season? Let’s break down some potential 2024 Virginia Tech Hokies stats.

Championship Odds: It’s Been a While

The days of Virginia Tech being a national contender are long gone. The Hokies have won double-digit games just once over the last 12 seasons.

Even if they make more gains in Year Three under Pry, the Hokies still have ways to go before re-entering the title discussion. Their +35000 NCAAF line— which places them on the same level as Michigan State, TCU and Iowa State — say as much.

In an absolute best-case scenario, the Hokies ride their experience to, say, eight wins and a berth in the ACC title game. But frankly, even that seems like a reach, given the past few seasons.

Bettors would be wise to turn elsewhere for an NCAA football championship wager.

Conference Odds: Not Favored, But in the Mix

The ACC is likely to be competitive at the top, with Florida State, Clemson, Miami, Louisville and NC State jockeying for position. Each school is priced 7/1 or better.

Virginia Tech could play its way into the mix as well, but only if it gets off to a strong start in conference play. Realignment has brought some quirkiness to the conference, with the Hokies slated to visit Stanford (Oct. 5) after opening at Miami (Sept. 27). A bye week follows.

  • At the very least, there’s substantial value in Virginia Tech at +1200 (up from +1400).

Regular Season Wins: Opportunity’s Knocking

For starters, the schedule management. Very, very manageable. The Hokies play Vanderbilt, Marshall, Old Dominion and Rutgers in non-conference and don’t have ACC contenders Florida State, Louisville or NC State. Their Nov. 9 date with Clemson is at home.

The Hokies have not won more than seven games since 2019 (8-5), but the table’s set for a strong season.

The entire offense returns, including running back Bhayshul Tuten and wide receiver Ali Jennings. Meanwhile, Pry bolstered the defensive line by adding transfers in Duke’s Aeneas Peebles, Oklahoma’s Kelvin Gilliam Jr., and Alabama’s Khurtiss Perry.

It’s no wonder the Hokies’ projected win total (8.0) continues to climb.

To Make Playoffs: Not Under Consideration … For Now

The College Football Playoff is set to triple in size, with the field expanding from four to 12 schools. Despite that, there doesn’t seem to be much hope for Virginia Tech.

The Hokies’ playoff odds aren’t listed at the moment.

That can change, of course. However, the margin for error is incredibly thin.

Side Bets: ACC Play Offers Opportunities

  • Feeling bold? Bettors can get Virginia Tech Over 5.5 ACC wins at +150 odds.

The Hokies have not surpassed this total since 2016, but last season’s 5-3 mark shows the potential is there.
