Georgia and Texas The Teams to Beat in Star-Studded SEC

Georgia Ready to Dominate Again When It Comes to the 2024 SEC Win Total Projections

Heisman Trophy Candidates Abound Among the Top SEC Football Title Contenders

The NCAAF Southeastern Conference actually is more imposing than it has been in past years with Oklahoma and Texas leaving the Big 12 to become the two newest SEC teams.

When looking at the projected 2024 SEC win totals, the line has been set at 8.5 or higher for eight of the teams in the SEC with only Arkansas, Mississippi State, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt projected as the only SEC teams that won’t become bowl-eligible during the 2024 season.

There are three players ranging from +800 to +1000 in the Heisman Trophy and they happen to be SEC quarterbacks with Carson Beck of Georgia and Quinn Ewers of Texas the current front-runners followed by Alabama’s Jalen Milroe.

When looking at the NCAA football rankings, Georgia leads the way at +330 in the odds of winning the national championship with Texas (+700) having the third-shortest championship odds.

It is not a surprise that the sportsbook odds have the SEC at -150 to have the most teams in the College Football Playoff field. Seven of the 20 teams with the best odds of reaching the College Football Playoff hail from the SEC.

Week 1 games on the NCAAF football schedule to keep an eye on include Georgia being listed as a 13-point favorite versus Clemson, Texas A&M listed as a 1.5-point favorite against Notre Dame, Miami and Florida meeting for just the second time in the last 11 seasons, along with LSU facing USC.

Here’s a look at the SEC, based on the expected regular-season win totals.

Georgia lost some key players to the NFL but what else is new?

Led by quarterback and Heisman Trophy co-favorite Carson Beck, Georgia is the team to be beat not only in the SEC but in the race for the national title.

Georgia’s bid to win three consecutive national titles ended when the Bulldogs failed to receive one of the four spots in the College Football Playoff field after falling to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game.

  • According to the 2024 SEC win total odds, Georgia is at -110 to go over 10½ regular-season wins and -120 to finish with 10 wins or less.

Longhorns logoLonghorns Eye Another CFP Invite

Texas is coming off a run to the national semifinals and, like Georgia, returns its starting quarterback.
Texas QB Quinn Ewers shares +800 Heisman Trophy odds with Georgia’s Beck, even though the highly touted Arch Manning is waiting in the wings.

Longhorns is priced at +250 to win the SEC title in its debut season in the best conference in college football.

According to the 247sports.com database, Texas is fifth in the ranking of the best class of transfers. However, three of the teams ahead of them are from the SEC. UTSA edge rusher Trey Moore could be the top incoming transfer for the Longhorns.

A quick peek at the 2024 SEC win total projections, Texas is at +135 to go over 10.5 wins during the regular season.

Crimson Tide logoAre the Saban-less Tide Ready to Roll?

Alabama has had quite the offseason, with legendary head coach Nick Saban retiring and several high-profile players transferring out.

Four of the top 20 outgoing transfers left Alabama with defensive back Caleb Downs and quarterback Julian Sayin both landing at Ohio State, receiver Isaiah Bond going to Texas and cornerback Dezz Ricks transferring to Texas A&M.

Kalen DeBoer, fresh off leading Washington to the national title game, takes over at Alabama and he does have plenty of talent to work with.

  • There could be some good value to go with the +120 odds for Alabama to go over 9.5 regular-season wins.

Who Could Crack the Top 3?

  • Many view Ole Miss and Missouri as teams capable of winning 10 games in the regular season.
Ole Miss is at -110 to top 9.5 wins with Missouri at +110 to exceed 9.5 victories,
  • You shouldn’t overlook LSU, Tennessee, and Texas A&M, with odds set at -115 to go either over or under 9 wins for LSU, -170 to exceed 8.5 wins for Tennessee, and -130 to go over 8.5 wins for Texas A&M.

Ole Miss still has quarterback Jaxson Dart, although the transfer of dynamic running back Quinshon Judkins to Ohio State does hurt. This is a key year at LSU for Brian Kelly, who has yet to overwhelm after leaving Notre Dame to head to Baton Rouge. Replacing Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels will be no easy task while receiver Malik Nabers joined Daniels as a top-10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

When looking at the NCAA football scores, Missouri could be undefeated going into the late-October matchup with Alabama.

The jury is still out on Tennessee after the Volunteers were 0-3 against ranked teams last season.

Ready to Make a Move?

Oklahoma (-120 to go over 7.5 wins), Auburn (+115 to go over 7.5 wins), and Kentucky (+105 to go over 6.5 wins) are teams worth keeping an eye on.

It is hard to know what to expect from Oklahoma as the Sooners make the jump from the Big 12.

Auburn looks to improve in a 1-3 record in one-score games in 2023.

Alabama and Georgia blew out Kentucky, but Kentucky lost its other four games by a total of 29 points.

This could certainly be a season to remember in the SEC.
